Overview
α?Arbutin is a hydroquinone glycoside with the chemical name 4?hydroxyphenyl?D?glucopyranoside. It is found in plants including bearberry and bilberry. It is an emerging natural whitening active ingredient characterized by non?irritation, non?sensitization and good formulation compatibility. The molecular structure of arbutin contains two structural and functional groups: glucose residue and phenolic hydroxyl group. α?Arbutin occurs as white to light?grey powder, and is freely soluble in water and ethanol.
Mechanism of Action
α?Arbutin exerts its whitening effect by directly inhibiting tyrosinase activity to reduce melanin production, rather than suppressing cell growth or tyrosinase gene expression. Owing to its higher efficacy and superior safety as a whitening active substance, numerous cosmetic companies worldwide have adopted α?arbutin to replace β?arbutin as a whitening additive.
