Introduction and Application Fields of Ginkgo biloba Extract
1. Introduction to Ginkgo biloba Extract
Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE for short) is a mixture of active ingredients prepared from the dried leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. through extraction, purification and other processes. As an ancient gymnosperm, Ginkgo biloba is known as a "living fossil", and its medicinal value has long been recorded in traditional medicine. The development of modern extraction technology has enabled more efficient utilization of its active ingredients.
The main active components of GBE are flavonoids and terpenolactones (including ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide), which are the key to its physiological activities. In addition, the extract also contains a small amount of organic acids, polysaccharides and other components. Currently, commercially available Ginkgo biloba extracts are mostly subjected to standardized treatment to ensure the stable content of active ingredients. For example, the common EGb761 standard extract requires the content of flavonoids not less than 24% and terpenolactones not less than 6%.
2. Application Fields of Ginkgo biloba Extract
(1) Cosmetics Field
Due to its good antioxidant and microcirculation-improving properties, GBE has also been widely used in the cosmetics field. It can scavenge free radicals in the skin, delay skin aging, and reduce the formation of wrinkles and spots; at the same time, it improves the blood supply to the skin, providing sufficient nutrition and oxygen for the skin, keeping the skin ruddy and shiny. Therefore, GBE is often added to anti-aging skin care products, moisturizing lotions, serums and other products.
(2) Food and Health Care Field
In the food and health care field, GBE, as a natural active ingredient, is used to produce various dietary supplements, such as Ginkgo biloba capsules, tablets, oral liquids, etc., for consumers to take daily for health care purposes, such as enhancing immunity, improving sleep, and relieving fatigue. In addition, it is also used in small amounts in functional foods and beverages to endow foods with certain health functions.
